Blog for Fun: Peshtigo Fire Conversation

You learned that on October 8, 1871, the entire city of Peshtigo suffered greatly from a massive fire. Back then, Peshtigo was a larger city than Green Bay. How do you think the city would be different today if there had been no fire?

There are not a lot of people in Peshtigo now because of the Peshtigo fire. If the fire didn't happen then there would be more people in Peshtigo because the people who live will probably soon have babies and when those babies grow up they will have more babies and that will make Peshtigo a more populated city.

One of the ways the peshtigo fire could have started was because there was a long drought that summer and it only rained two times.

I think the few people who survived the peshtigo fire were very lucky.

Before the horrible fire in 1871 there used to be more people in Peshtigo than in Green Bay, but after the fire that changed. The great Peshtigo fire killed many people. In fact, we believe only 10 people out of 30,000 survived. The people who survived the fire moved to a different part of Wisconsin, and now there are fewer people in Peshtigo. More than half the population is gone, maybe even more. Today, about 16,000 people now live in Peshtigo. If the fire didn't happen maybe it would be be a large city, even bigger than Green Bay is today.
