Think of a time when you marveled at something in nature, a time when you really said, "WOW!" Write a paragraph describing how you felt and what caused you to feel that way.
This summer, in late July, our family went up north to Star Lake. Right when we got there, we went down to the pier and started dipping our toes in the water. Suddenly, the largest snapping turtle any of us have ever seen came up from under the water and was swimming in the lake. We were all so freaked out because Ella had just gotten out of the water and this turtle was enormous. It could have chomped her foot off! I was scared and nervous, so I started laughing because thats what I do when I feel that way.
One time, in Maui, our family went snorkling in the ocean. The ocean was so clear that you could see more than 100 feet. So we were looking around trying to find some interesting things when all of a sudden, this huge sea turtle just comes out of nowhere. Then I went towards it and I got less than 6 inches away from it before it swam away. It felt great to be 6 inches away from underwater life. Another time while we were in Maui snorkling, my sister and I went about 11 feet down. Then we see this long fish. It had a long body and long snout and it was bluish-gray. I have never seen anything like it before. It felt like I had just discovered a new kind of fish.
I thought that the Grand Canyon in Arizona was marvelous! It was so big and deep and beautiful. I was only 7 years old when I saw it and I didn't know then that it was created by the Colorado River - that is amazing. We are going back to see it again this November and I can't wait. I think we might take a donkey ride down into the canyon to see it more thoroughly. This time I will be even more impressed by it because I know more about it.
I have so many memories of the ocean, mountains, the woods, and the turning of spring each year. However, thinking back to when I was your age, I realize my dad was the one who helped me realize the marvels that are found in our own backyards.
When I was a little girl and my mom would go up north with her friends in the summer, my dad would let us stay up late. I still remember him taking us out on the lake late at night. I would lean back against my sister's back and we would gaze out into the starstruck sky. The ripples quietly lapped at the edges of the canoe and the frogs sang together across the lake. I felt little in a big universe and wondered just how small I was amongst all that was around me.
I really marveled when I was in Eleuthra, Bahamas this last spring break. When it was evening, we all went out to see the sunset. It was so beautiful I did not want to go back inside. The sunset seemed more spectacular than anything I have ever seen before. So I stayed out on the balcony and sat there until it was nighttime.
When nighttime came the stars were just as wonderful. The sky was so black that you could see every star around. My mom even saw a shooting star.
Once I was sitting im my grandmas house in the living room and then I saw my aunt and uncle. I was so happy because I knew they just had a baby. When they brought him in the room I thought I had just saw heaven. I felt lucky because my aunt let me hold him. When my aunt came and wanted him back I almost didnt want to let go but I knew I had to. I felt so happy I had just gotten a new baby cousin. I thought that was one of my top 10 moments in my life. His name was Greyson.
I marveled at my Up North Cabin. I have never walked around the lake in the woods. Trees were everywhere the scenery was just beautiful. My Uncle took me to see the woods. I never knew there was a hundred year old logging camp in the woods. The thing that was amazing was a big boulder, it was a hundred years old with weird dark green old moss. Later through the walk we found a culver with no water in it. I found a old turtle shell with no turtle in it, I thought it was marvelous.
Just about the only (somewhat recent) time when I marveled at nature was when I looked through my grandma's binoculars at the Orion Nebula. Through my telescope, I couldn't see it, but through the binoculars it was a fuzzy streak of green, with a star or two around it. It really told me that the universe is huge!
Once when I was playing outside I saw a butterfly. It was yellow with red markings. I caught it once and watched for a little while. Then I let it go. And it came back the next day and sat on a dandelion.
I really marveled at the walking tour of Milwaukee. The view was so good it was better than looking up at a starstruck sky. I felt the brisk air. It was really fun. TS
I have really enjoyed reading all about the different natural scenes that have marveled you. It amazes me how it is sometimes the things that are around us on a daily basis, the simplest things, that cause us to marvel at the beauty of the world. Thank you for sharing all of your stories. I can tell we are going to have a great year of writing and sharing.
